Tigh Na Tobair
Julian and his wife Claire wanted a holiday home where they could relax and unwind within an inspiring location. They located the property on the northwest coast of Skye, with panoramic mountain views that overlooked the captivating Loch Dunvegan. The site is close to the highly acclaimed Three Chimneys Restaurant, sought out by tourists worldwide, so they decided to purchase.”
“There were aspects of the current design that did not maximise the potential of the property, so they set to work with Elena from Kindellan & Grant Architects to discuss how best to achieve what they desired from the house.;
“One key point was that they wanted to amplify the view and open up the back of the house, so Elena designed large, glazed panels and increased the decking area to allow the room to feel much bigger and create an inside / outside connection.”
“Due to the harsh environment a feasibility study was undertaken to find suitable products that would be acceptable for their exposed location and from there Julian & Claire chose Rationel Auraplus products.”
So why choose Rationel?
““We preferred Rationel Auraplus products due to the modern style, clean lines, details, and performance. The windows are beautiful and really enhance the buildings appeal.
We opted for triple glazing to reduce noise and ensure warmth in the winter. There is now so much glazing, it provides the feeling of being together with the environment, so a resounding success! We were not allowed to have more that 25% glazing, but by opting for triple glazing with a u value of 0.79w/m2 it meant that we could have more and it still passed!
“The sliding door, we just love! – the large lever handles feel secure and are extremely easy to operate, the optional ventilation points are great as we do not have any other form of ventilation in that room.“
"It is all in the detail - little things like the trickle vents being fitted flush to timber on inside with no external hoods outside, make the system look and feel high quality. We were pleased with the wide range of colour options available and chose a chocolate brown colour which gives a richer appearance and blends in with the colour schemes in the surrounding areas. All of which helped us make our decision on supplier” Julian & Claire
Working with ADW
"The house was purchased from and alterations completed by Donald of Mckenzie Building & Civil Engineers Ltd. Donald worked closely with Architectural Doors & Windows to ensure a smooth order and delivery process. “ADW were great throughout the quoting and ordering process, they helped us finalise sizing on large, glazed units, so that we got the balance right and were always on hand to discuss any queries / question we had. We would be happy to use again and recommend to others.” – Donald McKenzie.
End Result
“We are so happy with the result. Everyone that has seen or stayed in it has been very complimentary. My father-in-Law advised us that the “large, glazed window is the only one he has ever come across that makes him want to sit down with a coffee and look out all day – we will take that!"
“After installation, we wanted to change the locking system on the sliding door. We dealt with Mark Hampson in Aftersales, who was super helpful and collaborated with us to find a suitable solution, even though ADW did not supply the part. 5-star customer service” Julian & Claire
